Get to Know Us | Jussi Ekonen, Senior Associate, M&A, Helsinki

When did you start working at Hannes Snellman?
I joined Hannes Snellman in August 2019. My specialities are private mergers and acquisitions and infrastructure projects.
What is your professional background?
My educational background differs a bit from most Finnish attorneys. I have completed all my university studies abroad and gained my Master of Laws (LLM) degree from the University of Edinburgh. I highly recommend everyone to pursue studies abroad through exchange programmes or otherwise. From a professional perspective, it is interesting to meet people from different jurisdictions with a whole lot of different views to legal issues. Law aside, the best thing about studying abroad is that I made life-long friends from all over the world.
Prior to joining Hannes Snellman, I worked at another Helsinki-based law firm for roughly four and half years, mainly concentrating on advising clients on energy construction projects, M&A, and company law-related matters. I have also worked as an in-house legal counsel at a Finnish listed company.
How would you describe the Hannes Snellman culture?
I find the atmosphere at Hannes Snellman relaxed, and I felt very welcome when I joined the team. I have been very impressed with the professional skillset of my colleagues, and while law is a serious matter, working with it does not have to be.
What do you like most about your job?
I like the fact that there are no limits for personal development and there is hardly ever two identical days at work. You never know what kinds of new challenges are waiting to be tackled when you wake up in the morning – it is exciting!
How do you like to spend your free time?
My free time is a combination of relaxing and doing sports. I love spending time at our summer cottage; there is nothing that beats a quiet summer night and sauna by the lake. I also like doing all kinds of sports, including ice hockey, football, tennis, paddle, and golf. Sports gives a nice balance to working life.
What is the best advice you have received when it comes to your career?
I think the best advice I have received during my career came from my first legal superior. When I was contemplating how to draft complex contract clauses, she always used to ask me “What do you want to achieve and, most importantly, what does it mean in practice?”. Simple, but best solutions usually are.
