Get to Know Us | Maria Orrgard, Counsel, Finance & Restructuring, Stockholm

3 April 2020

What is your professional background?

Before Hannes Snellman, I worked at a Swedish bank for 12 years. Thus, I also experienced the financial crisis 2008-2009. At the time of the last financial crisis, I was sitting on the trading floor working as a legal counsel with a focus on the bond markets. The last nine years at SEB, I spent most of my time working with leveraged finance and occasionally financing of asset-backed transactions.

What are the differences between working at a law firm and working as an in-house lawyer?

When you are working at a law firm, you work in a legal team. In my old position, I was usually the only legal counsel working together with people from the business side, which means you get a great understanding of how business people think and act. The documents and the business hours are the same, and the legal questions are more or less the same. Working as an in-house lawyer meant that you got a good understanding of the dos and don’ts when it comes to how a law firm should act, and that is something I try to incorporate in my own work.

What have your last projects been like?

My last couple of projects at Hannes Snellman have involved working with great people and interesting financings. Debt providers have mainly been debt funds with a lot of experience of the market.

How do you like to spend your free time?

Well, I love the mountains and the ocean so preferably something that involves skiing, trekking (preferably on high altitude), or diving. I love to see new places and meet new people.
